摘要近年来,人们对文学作品中隐喻的研究也从修辞的角度发展到认知的视角,论证了隐喻普遍存在于我们的思维、语言和行为之中的认知语言学观点。《简·爱》自问世以来已成为世界文学的主要部分,激起了各国批评家的强烈兴趣。书中丰富的隐喻表达为文学、修辞学及语言学研究提供了宝贵资源。本文试图运用概念隐喻理论对小说中女主人公简·爱的形象塑造进行探究。关键词:概念隐喻;人物刻画;《简爱》:认知语言学Abstract in EnglishRecently,the perspective of studies of metaphors in literature have varied fromrhetoric to cognitive linguistics,which demonstrates the cognitive linguisticstandpointthat metaphor is omnipresent and it suffuses our thoughts,language andbehavior.Since its publication,Jane Eyre has aroused strong interest among literarycritics worldwide and has become a staple of literature.In addition,plentifulmetaphorical linguistic expressions in this book provide precious resources for literary,rhetoric andlinguistic studies.Focusing on the character portrayal of the heroine,JaneEyre,this thesis serves as a systematic research on the application of the ConceptualMetaphor Theory to character image portrayal in literature.Keywords:conceptual metaphor;character portrayal;linguistics.JaneEyre;cognitive目录Chapter 1 Introduction.21.2 Significance of the Study....3Chapter 2 Analysis of the Metaphors in the Character Portrayal of Jane Eyre in CognitiveApproach--1 LIFE ISABURDEN....8Chapter 3 Analysis of the Metaphors in the Character Portrayal of Jane Eyre in CognitiveApproach--LIFE IS AFIGH-1-FOR IDEAL....13Chapter 4Analysis of the Metaphors in the Character Portrayal of Jane Eyre in CognitiveChapter 5 Analysis of the Metaphors in the Character Portrayal of Jane Eyre in CognitiveApproach--1ANE EYRE IS ELF.17Chapter 6Conclusions ...............Chapter 1 Introduction1.1 Background of the Study.For over 2,000 years,metaphor was studied within the discipline known asrhetoric.Aristotle once said,"the greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor.Itis the onething that cannot be learned from others.It is the hallmark of genius"(WangYin,2007:403).Far from being merely a matter of figure of speech,metaphor is amatter of thought.Human language and conceptual system are fundamentallymetaphorical in nature.Intheir most influential book Metaphors We Live By,Lakoffand Johnson claim that theessence of metaphor is understanding and experiencing onekind of thing in terms ofanother.This book is the landmark in the study of metaphorfrom the cognitiveperspective.Numerous scholars,such as Mark Johnson,Mark Turner,ZoltanKovecses,GillesFauconnier,Elena Semino,Raymond Gibbs have madegreatcontribution to the development of cognitive metaphor theory.They demonstratethatmetaphor is fundamentally not a rhetorical device,but a cognitive process,whichinfluences human understanding of the world and plays a vital role in theformation ofhuman categorization,conceptual structure and reasoning.Recently,thestudies ofmetaphors from the cognitive perspective have attached great importance tothe languageexpressions of literary works,and scholars have varied their researchmethod fromrhetoric to cognitive linguistics.The language expressions in the literaryworks provideabundant resources for the development of cognitive metaphorsJane Eyre was written by Charlotte 13ronte in the early Victorian period and wasfirstpublished in I $47.It is her most successful work and has remained the mostpopular ofher books.Since its f rst appearance,Jane Eyre's passionate voice offirst-person heroinetook the Victorian literature world by storm,and Charlotte's talentwas almost universally acclaimed.Charlotte Bronte has a good command ofvocabulary,and flexibly use of the Bibleallusions.Meanwhile,poeticlanguageanddifferentsentencepatternsto portray characters are the distinctive features of Jane Eyre.Thenumerous metaphorical linguisticexpressions in the book are rich resources for literary,rhetoric and linguisticstudies.Inspired by the achievements in cognitive linguistics,the author of the presentstudyattempts to analyze the metaphors used in the character portrayal of Jane Eyre inthe novel from the cognitive perspective.1.2 Significance of the StudyThe significance of the study mainly includes:First,Jane Eyre is generally acknowledged as an autobiographical novel ofCharlotte Bronte,and the development of the novel is mostly based on her lifeexperiences;by theanalysis of the relationship between the Charlotte Bronte and JaneEyre in Jane Eyre,thisthesis will testify the feasibility of three claims of the embodiedphilosophy in theanalysis of literary work,and facilitate readers'understanding of thisnovel from thecognitive perspective.second,with the close examination of conceptual metaphors in the novel,thisthesiswill elaborate on the contribution of this cognitive tool to the portrayal of thecharacterimage.if successful,it will provide a new way for the study of charactercreation in literature.1.3 Literature ReviewOver the last thirty years,the influence of Cognitive Metaphor Theory (CMT)hasshifted attention to patterns of conventional metaphorical expressions in
