AbstractWith the surging of the second-wave feminist movement which brought into the spotlightthe women of color and women from other developing nations who were seeking femaleindependence and female solidarity,an increasing number of writers begin to focus on thoseformerly marginalized women, especially the colored women.Toni Morrison, for example,is anAmerican writer who is dedicated to writing about African American women as well as AfricanAmerican society, culture and history. Her second novel,Sula,is a typical novel about the bondof sisterhood between two black women. The publication of this novel has initiated the literarystudy on sisterhood, especially the sisterhood between or among African American women, which has never been a major focus of novels before Sula. Therefore, this thesis attempts toexplore the theme of sisterhood in Sula by analyzing the characteristics, necessity, andlimitations of sisterhood, thus demonstrating the significance of female solidarity. This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One is the introduction part, where ToniMorrison and her second novel Sula are introduced, the concept of sisterhood is explained, andliterature review and the layout of the thesis are presented. The following three chapters are themain body of this thesis.Chapter Two discusses the typical characteristics of sisterhoodincluding its dominant position and complexity in Sula.Chapter Three explores the necessity ofsisterhood:to begin with, sisterhood plays an essential role in surviving and combating racismand sexism imposed upon African American women;secondly, sisterhood can serve as a solacecompensating for the lack of maternal and paternal love.Chapter Four analyzes the limitations ofsisterhood encompassing the vulnerability before the intervention and coercion of patriarchy andthe fragility in front of different values mainly caused by different upbringings.Chapter Five isthe conclusion which argues that although sisterhood is fraught with complexities and conflicts,it is still significant to strengthen female solidarity in the patriarchal society, and that sisterhoodshould be regarded as equally important as other relationships including the man-womanrelationship and parent-child relationship. Chapter One Introduction1.1 An Introduction to Toni Morrison and SulaToni Morrison is an African American writer who has won the Nobel Prize inLiterature. She enrolled at the historically black Howard University in 1949 andgraduated in 1953 with a B.A.in English.Later, she went on to earn a Master of Artsfrom Cornell University in 1955.It was during the 1970s that she had begun wringfictions as part of an informal group of poets and writers at Howard University.Duringher life, she has created numerous notable works including The Bluest Eye (1970),Sula(1973),Song of Solomon (1977),Tar Baby (1981),Beloved (1987),Jazz (1992),Paradise(1997),Love (2003),and Home (2010).She won the Pulitzer Prize and the AmericanBook Award in 1988 for Beloved which was later adapted into a film of the same name.In 1993,Morrison became the first black woman of any nationality who was awarded theNobel Prize in Literature. Her citation reads:Toni Morrison,"who in novelscharacterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect ofAmerican reality."In terms of the genre,Morrison exemplifies characteristics of"postmodern feminism"by altering Euro-American dichotomies by rewriting a historywritten by mainstream historians and by her usage of shifting narration in Beloved andParadise.Sula is Morrison's second novel. It focused on the intimate and complex friendshipbetween two African American girls,Sula and Nel,along with a series of stories relatingto life and death, love and hatred,in a mostly black neighborhood named the Bottom inOhio. The story is chronologically divided, starting from 1910 to 1965 and covering thetwo world wars and the second wave of feminist movement.Sula and Nel,despite theirdifferences in upbringings, became fiercely attached to each other during their childhoodand adolescence until Sula's accidentally drowning of Chicken Little made them grow
