London (1876-1916),as a reputed realistic writer in the 20thcentury,wrote one of his the most famous novels named The Sea Wolfattracting large amounts of readers. He depicted the very coexistenceand struggle between Captain Larson and his sailors, and vividlyshowed readers the duality of Captain Larson's nature both in humannature and in wolf instinct. The thesis is focusing on Captain Larson's duality of nature and the analysis of the reasons.ThroughoutLondon's whole novel,Larson's life philosophy and his rudebehaviors show his wolf instinct. On the contrary,Larson'scommunications with the author named Humphrey, his attitudes towardsknowledge and pursuits of love all present the captain'human nature. And the most important reason leading to his duality is mainly, inone aspect, out of needs for survival, and others out of his greedfor the dominant state. With the conclusions drawn by analysis, thereason why Captain Larson was defeated in the final is Larson'sindulgence in his desire and behaviors.Human being,as a biological species,is a part of nature. If thereis not nature, there is no breathing air and no water resources. As aresult, people finally only embark on the road to extinct. So itshould be interdependent between man and nature.Meanwhile, thisrequires us to follow the law of nature during the process oftransforming and utilizing nature.Key words:human nature;wolf instinct;the forhis books The Call of the Wild,White Fang and The Sea Wolf.AmongLondon's literature works,he focuses on more about the issues ofthe common's survival and the poor people in lower class.Nevertheless,he is not aimed at writing fanciful imagination butadversity. For the reason that his family was very poor,Jack had to leaveschool at the very young age to earn money for the whole family'sliving. From his earliest youth,he began to support himself even hisfamily with some inglorious and dangerous jobs which the most otherwriters and intellectuals had never experienced in person.Forinstance,he experienced,by the time he was eighteen, the work as acannery worker, jute mill worker,an oyster pirate, seaman and coalshoveler.Being as a member of Coxey's army,he once has been jailedfor thirty days for his vagrant life.Just for his brief time inprison,he decided to educated himself. It was not as impoverished as London's later accounts claimed,London was educated largely with regardless of his family's workingclass. He finished high school in a short time and was admitted intothe University of California. For the reality,he had been writingfor many years, but he became a professional writer after hissearching for gold from 1897 to 1898.In the year 1897,he began toAlaska to find gold.Without getting much gold,he found his ideasfor writing books and stories. With such a strong idea,he went backhis hometown and began his writing career. After his back to SanFrancisco,he threw himself into writing. In 1900,he published hisfirst short story -The Son of Wolf, which made him being known bymany people. In 1903,that he created The Call of Wild made him morepopular. And in 1904,one of his famous long novels-The Sea Wolfwas finished and gained its best seller. His books were graduallypopular among the people of the day,and he became rich and welcomedwhen he was at the age of thirty.Unfortunately,he died young from "gastrointestinal"and failingkidneys for years. He took his own life in 1916.He was then onlyforty years old.Throughout his whole life,he has completed in all19 long novels, over 150 short stories,3 plays and some comments. With his eminent devotion to American literature,Jack London waspraised by American biography novelist Stone who said Jack London isthe father of proletarian literature, which was written in his Sailoron Horseback.Although Jack London has died for so many years, hisworks were greatly welcomed in United States, even all around theworld. We all should respect him.
